The Iowa results: Santorum's baggage

Just how unserious are Republicans about defeating Barack Obama in November? So unserious that, in Iowa, at least, they came painfully close on Tuesday night to making Rick Santorum their putative standard-bearer. Mr. Santorum, the former congressman and senator of Pennsylvania, came within eight votes of defeating former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. It was the closest finish in the history of the Hawkeye State caucuses. Santorum bills himself as the conservative alternative to Mr. Romney. But saying you're a conservative doesn't mean you are one. (Think John McCain.) Oh, indeed, the Virginian (ne Pennsylvanian) has the corner on the theological...

What About Newt?

With all the chaos surrounding the Republican nomination race, one thing is very clear: somewhere along the way, Mitt Romney made a Damn Yankees-like pact with Satan to score this group of individuals to run against. It is certain that a vast majority of Republican primary voters do not like Mitt Romney. In fact, we can go further – they can’t stand him. That’s why he’s never broken 30 percent in any national poll of Republican primary voters. That’s why Tea Party support has shuffled from Michele Bachmann to Rick Perry to Herman Cain. Sadly, though, none of those candidates...

TSA: Worker Who Wrote ‘Freak On’ Note No Longer Checking Baggage

NEW YORK - A Transportation Security Administration employee responsible for a passenger’s ‘freak’ out earlier this week is no longer checking luggage, according to the agency. Jill Filipovic, of Brooklyn, who flew from Newark Liberty Airport to Dublin over the weekend opened her luggage Monday morning to discover a personalized note on an official TSA form, reading “GET YOUR FREAK ON GIRL.” Filipovic, a lawyer and blogger, believes the note stemmed from the small vibrator that was packed in her suitcase. On Wednesday, the TSA said that it had “quickly launched an investigation and identified the employee responsible.”

Delta baggage kerfuffle not the airline's fault

Liberals are using the Pentagon bureaucracy's mistake to attack Delta, and other, airlines. You've probably heard how Delta charged some servicemen returning from Afghanistan huge fees for extra luggage. Many people including Barbara "don't call me ma'am" Boxer are all upset about how poorly the soldiers were treated. Apparently Boxer thinks only liberal Senators can be nasty to people who put their lives on the line to protect the country. Everyone can agree that telling soldiers coming back from Afghanistan that they have to pony up $200 because they brought 4 bags rather than 3 is insane. But what most...

Chameleon: The long-buried liberal history of Newt Gingrich

After many feints in this direction dating back to 1996, Newt Gingrich seems to be finally preparing a run for president. Generally, he is not being taken as seriously as potential candidates like Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee—or even D.C. insider heartthrobs such as Haley Barbour, Mitch Daniels, and Chris Christie. I agree with this assessment of Gingrich’s potential, to an extent; he’s the opposite of a fresh new face, and the guy’s baggage rivals Charlie Sheen’s. Yet having carefully watched Gingrich up close since he was a Rockefeller Republican in the 1970s, I also know that he...

Spirit Airlines to Charge for Some Carry-On Bags

Most airlines are charging for checked bags, but starting today, one discount air carrier will begin charging for some carry-on bags. KYW’s Jim Melwert reports Spirit Airlines is now charging for carry-on bags that have to be stowed in the overhead compartments. Spokeswoman Misty Pinson: “The whole idea behind Spirit’s philosophy is that we give the customers the purchasing power, and they have the power to pick and choose what options they do and don’t want to pay for.” Bags that fit under the seat will be free, and there’s no charge for purses, laptops or umbrellas. But any bag...

Airlines bag big bucks from fees

U.S. airlines are world-beaters when it comes to finding creative ways to boost baggage fees, onboard food sales and other revenues that aren't rolled into airfares, financial data show. United, American and Delta led global carriers in collecting ancillary revenues in 2009, according to a new study by airline consultancy IdeaWorks and Amadeus, a giant clearinghouse for airline transactions. Airlines worldwide collected $13.5 billion in 2009, a 43 percent jump from 2008 totals, according to the study of financial filings made by 96 airlines.
